Seymour: An Introduction

Q&A: JBFC Artist-in-Residence Brad Barber & JBFC Creative Culture Director Sean Weiner

I had a really special experience watching this documentary at the New Zealand International Film Festival in 2015.  It was such a lovely, warm portrait of this lovely, warm artist and everyone in the theater could feel it. I grew up taking piano lessons, and the quiet, artful way this film portrays a teacher/artist who loves his craft is something that really connected with me—it’s a feeling I hope I can tap into with my new documentary, which is also about a devoted, quiet keyboardist. —Artist in Residence Brad Barber

Meet Seymour Bernstein: virtuoso pianist, veteran New Yorker, and a true original who gave up a successful concert career to teach music. In this wonderfully warm, witty, intimate tribute—made by his friend Ethan Hawke—Seymour shares unforgettable stories from his remarkable life, eye-opening words of wisdom, and insightful reflections on art, creativity, and the search for fulfillment. A “poignant guide to life” (Indiewire) and an engaging exploration on the dedication, perseverance, and fortitude essential to creating both art and a rewarding life, Seymour: An Introduction will leave audiences uplifted and inspired.
