Save the Last Dance

Critic, writer, and Pop Culture Happy Hour co-host Aisha Harris in conversation with JBFC Senior Film Programmer Monica Castillo

Sara (Julia Stiles), a white ballet dancer who dreams of going to Juilliard, moves to Chicago’s South Side to live with her estranged dad following her mother’s death. She soon learns to move to a different beat when she makes friends at her new school and starts dating Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas), a Black classmate who dreams of becoming a doctor.

Presented on 35mm

"The setup promises cliches, but the development is intelligent, the characters are more complicated than we expect, and the ending doesn't tie everything up in a predictable way."
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Join Pop Culture Happy Hour co-host Aisha Harris in conversation with JBFC Senior Film Programmer Monica Castillo to discuss Save the Last Dance and Harris' debut book, Wannabe: Reckonings with the Pop Culture That Shapes Me.

  • Aisha Harris is a co-host and critic for NPR’s hit podcast Pop Culture Happy Hour, where they gab about—you guessed it—all things pop culture. Previously, she worked as a writer and editor at The New York Times and Slate Magazine, where she covered everything from the creation of an American Girl doll and Dolly Parton to the Exonerated Five. Her debut book Wannabe: Reckonings with the Pop Culture That Shapes Me, a collection of original essays, was released on June 13, 2023 by Harper One.
Copies of Wannabe: Reckonings with the Pop Culture That Shapes Me will be available to purchase after the screening, courtesy of The Village Bookstore.
