In Kathryn Bigelow’s (Zero Dark Thirty, The Hurt Locker) cult classic, Keanu Reeves stars as Johnny Utah, a rookie special agent in the F.B.I. who gets partnered with seasoned veteran, Angelo Pappas (Gary Busey), to investigate a string of robberies perpetrated by a gang known as the Ex-Presidents—a group of thieves who pull off jobs wearing Nixon, Regan, Carter, and Johnson masks. Going off a hunch of Pappas’ that the Ex-Presidents are also members of a tight-knit group of surfers, Utah goes undercover into the surfing community to try and shake out some evidence. Utah befriends a wise, older surfer named Bodhi (Patrick Swayze) who welcomes him into the circle. Things between them go south when Utah begins to suspect that Bodhi and his friends are the Ex-Presidents. Endlessly entertaining from start to finish, the original Point Break is a rare example of an action-thriller put in the hands of an exceptionally talented director.
