Kate (Catherine Keener) and her husband, Alex (Oliver Platt) have a lucrative business buying furniture from the apartments of the recently deceased—items considered junk by their unsuspecting relatives—to sell for a large profit at their vintage furniture store. At home, with the hopes of expanding their apartment, they’ve bought the place next door. They’ve agreed to allow current occupant, 90-year-old Andra, to live there rent-free for the rest of her days (but they’re counting on that not being very long). Andra’s granddaughters, radiology technician Rebecca (Rebecca Hall) and masseuse Mary (Amanda Peet), are wary of the arrangement—and Kate and Alex’s exploitative intentions. Please Give is a hilarious look at the ironies of guilt and charity filtered through the ever-complicated lens of family and status.
