The Seventh Art Stand is a nationwide screening series presented by 50+ theaters, museums, and community centers in 25 states, as an act of cinematic solidarity against Islamophobia. For our part, we are screening the brilliant animated film, Persepolis. In the film, Marjane is a precocious and outspoken young Iranian girl who was nine years old during the Islamic Revolution when the fundamentalists first took power—forcing the veil on women and imprisoning thousands. She cleverly outsmarts the “social guardians” and discovers punk rock, ABBA, and Iron Maiden, while living with the terror of government persecution and the Iran/Iraq war. Adapted from Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel of the same name, Persepolis features voice work from Chiara Mastroianni (Three Hearts, Bastards), Danielle Darrieux (The Earrings of Madame de…, La Ronde), Simon Abkarian (Casino Royale, Gett—The Trial of Viviane Amsallem), and Catherine Deneuve (Belle du Jour, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg).
