An award-winning adaptation of the beloved graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi, Persepolis spans several decades and multiple countries, offering a kaleidoscopic view of an immigrant’s journey in the late 20th century.
Marjane is a precocious and outspoken young girl growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. As veils are forced on women and thousands are imprisoned, the clever and fearless Marjane still manages to discover punk, ABBA and Iron Maiden. But as she gets older, Marjane’s boldness causes her parents to worry over her continued safety, and eventually send her to school in Austria. Vulnerable and alone in a strange land, she endures the typical ordeals of a teenager, but also finds herself being equated with the religious fundamentalism and extremism she fled her country to escape.
