Directed by Matt Johnson (Blackberry) and adapted from Nirvanna the Band the Show, Johnson and Jay McCarroll’s cult web-series turned sitcom, Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie is a truly brilliant work of mockumentary filmmaking, a moving treatise on the power of friendship, and an early contender for the funniest film of 2026—regardless of whether you’ve seen the original series.
Like in the series, which features Matt Johnson and Jay McCarroll playing hapless versions of themselves, the Matt and Jay of the film form a struggling musical duo (“Nirvanna the Band”) who have never actually written a song or played a show, but whose great, elusive dream is to perform at famous Toronto venue the Rivoli. When their latest plan to book a show at the Rivoli goes horribly wrong, Matt and Jay accidentally travel back to the year 2008, sending them on an interdimensional odyssey through time.
