Night on Earth

Q&A with cinematographer Frederick Elmes on Jan. 9

Presented on 35mm

In his first collaboration with cinematographer Frederick Elmes, director Jim Jarmusch assembled an extraordinary international cast of actors (including Gena Rowlands, Winona Ryder, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Beatrice Dalle, and Roberto Benigni) for this hilarious quintet of tales of urban displacement and existential angst. Spanning time zones, continents, and languages, Jarmusch’s lovingly askew view of humanity from the passenger seats of five taxicabs in five different cities makes for one of his most charming and beloved films.

In celebration of Frederick Elmes’ work on Father Mother Sister Brother, we are pleased to highlight four classic films shot by him and directed by such luminaries as Jim Jarmusch (Night on Earth—35mm), Ang Lee (The Ice Storm—35mm), Charlie Kaufman (Synecdoche, New York—35mm), and David Lynch (Eraserhead).

"Jarmusch playfully blurs the line between driver/passenger, servant/customer, and native/immigrant, presenting these divisions as virtually meaningless social constructs which merely breed unnecessary contempt."
Derek Smith, Slant Magazine
"Jarmusch is a poet of the night... Waits' music helps to establish this mood of cities that have been emptied of the waking. It's as if the minds of these night people are affected by all of the dreams and nightmares that surround them."
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
