Albert Brooks takes a hilariously jaundiced view of modern romance in this comedy exploring the perils of playing the field. Robert (Brooks) is a neurotic Hollywood film editor whose doubts about his relationship with girlfriend Mary (Kathryn Harrold)–is she really The One?–leading to a break-up that engenders even more doubt and regret–not to mention awkward encounters with fellow singles. Before long he attempts to reconcile with Mary–but can he get out of his own way? The second feature in a Brooks catalog that remains a founding pillar for today’s cringe comedians, Modern Romance also stars Bruno Kirby (When Harry Met Sally), George Kennedy, his brother Bob Einstein (best known as “Super Dave Osborne”), and fellow filmmaker James L. Brooks, who would later return the favor by casting Albert in Broadcast News.
