Melo/Dramas with Lili Taylor and David Michalek

Screening with live accompaniment followed by Q&A with actress Lili Taylor & artist David Michalek

Screening in a movie theater for the very first time, David Michalek’s breathtaking slow-motion films of iconic stage and screen performers—including Lili Taylor—are paired with live music by Morton Feldman, performed by the acclaimed Neave Trio. Originally created for Portraits in Dramatic Time, which premiered at Lincoln Center Plaza in 2011, these films were hailed as a “new type of cinema,” drawing audiences into a hypnotic world that feels at once expansive, intimate, and quietly thrilling—like watching a landscape subtly transform over time.

Following the screening, actress Lili Taylor and artist David Michalek will join in conversation to explore what this project reveals about acting, art, and the nature of cinema.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Screening with live accompaniment followed by Q&A with actress Lili Taylor & artist David Michalek

Monday, Mar. 2 2026, 7:00

  • Lili Taylor is a Golden Globe-winning and three-time Emmy-nominated actor known for her roles in classic indie films including Mystic Pizza and I Shot Andy Warhol, and more recently in television hits American Crime, Six Feet Under, and The X Files, among others.
  • David Michalek is an American visual artist and director whose work is closely tied to an interest in the contemporary person, which he explores through the use of live performance, filmmaking, photography, drawing, installation, relational aesthetics and public projects. His work often concentrates on carefully-staged marginal moments that develop density with minimal action through interplays of image, sound, and decelerated time. Exploring notions of durational and rhythmic time, his works engage and generate intimate yet open-ended narratives. His recent work considers various forms of slowness alongside contemporary modes of public attention. Much of his practice plays with creating forms of “Social Sculpture” – works with an aesthetic that can provoke situations that are uniquely social and collectively unique.  He is particularly drawn to projects that bring artists and ideas into effective pairings, in settings ranging from museum galleries, theaters and public spaces, to houses of worship, community organizations and centers of learning. His solo and collaborative work has been shown nationally and internationally. He is on the visiting faculty of Yale Divinity School and Harvard University’s Theater, Dance and Media Program, where he lectures on Art and Social Action.
  • The Neave Trio is known for its fiery connection, exuberance, and a shared sense of storytelling that reflects the deep human bonds at the core of chamber music. New York’s WQXR explains, “‘Neave’ is actually a Gaelic name meaning ‘bright’ and ‘radiant,’ both of which certainly apply to this trio’s music making.” Through their engaging and polished performances, advocacy for the works by living composers, and educational activities, the Trio fosters meaningful connections, cultivating long-lasting relationships with audiences and the communities beyond. The Grammy-nominated Trio’s recordings have been named among the best recordings of the year by both The New York Times and BBC Radio 3, and Gramophone notes their performances as “thrilling,” having “wild energy” and “electrifying.”
