An avant-garde thriller about a deadly sexually transmitted disease that is sweeping the country, Mauvais Sang is the second film from Leos Carax (Holy Motors), who burst on the scene in 1984 with Boy Meets Girl. Juliette Binoche plays gangster Michel Piccoli’s 30-years-younger girlfriend, Anna, the object of obsession by a young thief (Denis Lavant) hired to pilfer a curative serum. Binoche says she “discovered the camera†during this shoot—and the camera certainly discovered her, capturing Anna’s alluring beauty and mystery. Binoche and Julie Delpy (in her first film) both received César nominations.
