Maudie is the true story of folk artist Maud Lewis (Sally Hawkins, Blue Jasmine, Happy-Go-Lucky), a bright-eyed, intelligent woman who, despite a struggle with crippling arthritis in her hands, yearns, passionately, to create art and to be independent from her family. To escape her solitary existence, Maudie answers an advertisement for a house keeper placed by the reclusive Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke, Born to Be Blue, Maggie’s Plan), a 40-year-old bachelor who makes a modest living peddling fish. Maudie and Everett’s relationship begins rather rockily (Maudie is a terrible housekeeper, talks too much, and spends much of her time painting doodles on the walls of the house), but eventually the two begin to fall in love. Directed by award-winning Irish filmmaker Aisling Walsh (Song for a Raggy Boy), Maudie charts one woman’s deep and abiding love for a difficult man and her surprising rise to fame as a painter.

Friday, May 30: Annual Pleasantville Volunteer Fire Department’s Firefighter Parade begins tonight at 6:00. Please leave extra time to get to your film.
