M*A*S*H

Presented on 35mm

M*A*S*H focuses on the men and women of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (M*A*S*H) during the Korean war. Amidst the backdrop of the overseas war, which manages to be both tense and dreary at the same time for the soldiers of M*A*S*H, trickster and draftee Captain Hawkeye Pierce (Donald Sutherland) strives to bring a little levity to their living conditions. Hawkeye finds an ally in Captain “Trapper” John McIntyre (Elliot Gould), a great chest-surgeon who is as undisciplined as Hawkeye. Together, Hawkeye and Trapper begin a campaign of mayhem against the no-nonsense pair of Major Frank Burns (Robert Duvall) and Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan (Sally Kellerman), who both take great issue with their lack of discipline. Through their pranks, Hawkeye and Trapper endeavor to maintain their own sanity amidst the horrors of war.

"We laugh, that we may not cry. But none of this philosophy comes close to the insane logic of M*A*S*H, which is achieved through a peculiar marriage of cinematography, acting, directing, and writing."
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
"Altman's black comedy perfectly expressed the anarchic, rebellious spirit of the 1970s with its blistering anti-war message and contempt for authority."
Neil Smith, BBC.com

This film is part of the Altman at 100 series.
