Loulou is an unconventional, deeply emotional exploration of social conventions, love, and sexual politics; it could not be mistaken for anything other than a French film. Young and attractive, Isabelle Huppert plays a trapped, bourgeois Parisian housewife, and Gérard Depardieu is the charming, sexy, and unemployed thug for whom she puts financial security—and her husband—aside. It’s a treat to see these two celebrated actors blossom in key early roles, in a film Andrew Sarris called “a masterpiece of subtlety and eroticism†(Village Voice). Remastered in 2015.
