Jaws: 50th Anniversary

Limited Screenings through Sept. 11

We’re going to need a bigger boat. Return to Amity Island and experience Jaws at the Jacob Burns Film Center! Jaws made history in 1975, turning a young Steven Spielberg into a household name and boldly establishing the summer blockbuster spectacle that revolutionized the film industry. Winner of three Academy Awards, Jaws has become a global phenomenon, and half a century later, it still draws in audiences around the world.

When the seaside community of Amity finds itself under attack by a dangerous great white shark, the town’s chief of police (Roy Scheider), a young marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a grizzled shark hunter (Robert Shaw) embark on a desperate quest to destroy the beast before it strikes again. Featuring an unforgettable score that evokes pure terror, Jaws remains one of the most influential and gripping adventures in motion picture history.

"[Jaws] was the complete nightmare that invented the 'summer blockbuster', launched the genius [of Spielberg] on a global scale and delivered an astonishingly effective thriller built on a very primal level: fear."
Ian Nathan, Empire
"There had been iconic movie scenes set on beaches before... but Jaws' hunger for exposed, all-American flesh went beyond adolescent titillation or seasonal nostalgia. Spielberg’s vision of scantily clad revelers taking their chances in troubled waters was and remains definitive, escapism mixed with anthropology."
Adam Nayman, The Ringer
