In the early 1970s, Helen Hooper was a free-spirited young woman who linked up with Pete McCloskey, a charismatic Republican congressman twenty-six years her senior, first as a political aide and then in marriage. Four decades later, as they anticipate his death, she wrestles with their marriage, her sexuality, and what’s been lost and won through a life by the side of a man she affectionately calls Bear. Nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Editing at the 2024 IDA Awards, Helen and the Bear is a surprising and moving portrait of a woman—and relationship—that contains multitudes.
