A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS — (Presented on 35mm)

Chuck Russell, US, 1987, 99 min. R.

In the cult favorite third installment of Wes Craven’s iconic slasher series, teenager Kristen Parker finds herself admitted to a psychiatric hospital by her mother after being attacked by nightmare monster Freddy Krueger. There, she meets a handful of other young patients being targeted in their dreams. The only asset they have in the fight against the monster is intern therapist Nancy Thompson, a survivor of Freddy’s previous attacks, who attempts to teach the patients how to protect themselves in the dream world.

ALTERED STATES — (Presented on 35mm)

Ken Russell, US, 1980, 102 min. R.

Using a sensory deprivation tank, psychophysiologist Edward Jessup (William Hurt) conducts experiments involving human consciousness using himself as the subject. His research intensifies when hallucinogenic compounds regress him to primitive stages of human evolution, where he transforms into an ape-like monster that stalks the city. As Jessup’s dangerous quest carries him back to the origins of life, only the strong-willed love of his devoted anthropologist wife, Emily (Blair Brown), can save him.

DONNIE DARKO

Richard Kelly, US, 2001, 113 min. R.

Initially beset with distribution problems, Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko would slowly find its audience and emerge as arguably the first cult classic of the new millennium. Described by its director as “The Catcher in the Rye as told by Philip K. Dick,” Donnie Darko stars Jake Gyllenhaal as the titular disturbed teenager who begins to experience apocalyptic visions of a man-sized rabbit named Frank. Also starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, Patrick Swayze, Drew Barrymore, Mary McDonnell, Katharine Ross, and Noah Wyle.

VAMPYROS LESBOS

Jess Franco, Spain/Germany, 1971, 89 min. R.

Out of the nearly 200 films directed by Euro-cult maestro Jess Franco, Vampyros Lesbos is the most essential. This artful, dreamlike retelling of Bram Stoker’s Dracula’s Guest stars the effervescent Soledad Miranda as the Countess—a vampire who casts an erotic spell over a vacationer named Linda that invades her dreams and draws her to a secluded island.

With three more phantasmagoric feature films from your dreams—or your nightmares—waiting to be announced!

This film is part of the After Hours series.
