Hairspray (1988)

Director John Waters’ unique brand of humor and social satire comes to life in Hairspray. It’s Baltimore, 1962, and a rebellious, “pleasantly plump” teenager named Tracy Turnblad attempts to become one of the featured stars on a popular dance show and win the coveted “Miss Auto Show” crown. After her dancing skills and relentless confidence earn her influence in the competition, she uses her newfound voice to advocate for change in her community by speaking out for desegregation and supporting her Black friends and neighbors.

All Ages screenings are just $5 for everyone—kids and adults alike. Enjoy a new family-friendly film each week on Saturdays and Sundays at 11:00AM, with the first Sunday of every month offering sensory friendly screenings.

"Not only Waters's best movie, but a crossover gesture that expands his appeal without compromising his vision one iota; Ricki Lake as the hefty young heroine is especially delightful."
Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader
"In his own weird way, Mr. Waters has captured the gleeful garishness of the early '60s, when high-school girls wore demure bows in their ratted hair and deadened their lips with palest pink lip gloss — and believed that racial harmony was inevitable if teens of all flavors could dance together on TV."
Julie Salamon, Wall Street Journal

This film is part of the All Ages series.
