Gay USA

Followed by a Panel Discussion on LGBTQ+ History and Rights—Post-event Happy Hour with 50% off wine

In celebration of LGBTQ+ history month, the JBFC is proud to present the 1977 documentary Gay USA. Restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archive in collaboration with Frameline and Outfest, Gay USA was shot by 25 teams at Pride protests across the United States and is thought to be the first American feature-length documentary by and about LGBTQ+ people. Gay USA offers a vibrant and beautiful snapshot of an incredible year in LGBTQ+ history and conveys a powerful message of hope to viewers today. Followed by a panel discussion on LGBTQ history and rights, in partnership with The LOFT LGBTQ+ Community Center.

Join us for a post-event Happy Hour at Take 3 Wine Bar & Café—just show your ticket at the bar to get 50% off any wine on our menu. Meet your neighbors, make new friends, and raise a glass to Queer cinema!

"Gay USA is simultaneously in its subject matter a reflection of our culture and, in its artistry, an expression of it."
Randy Alfred, San Francisco Sentinel
"Gay USA's footage of pride parades of days gone by-and the surprisingly supportive and intelligent straight onlookers cheering them on-seems as vital and unpretentious as those crisp Sunday afternoons in June 1977 when these interviews were captured for posterity."
David Serlin, University of California at San Diego

This film is part of the Out There series.
