“Last fall I served on the jury of the Horizons section of the fabulous Venice International Film Festival. Our jury was incredibly fortunate to be given 20 terrific new films from around the world from which we determined the four that deserved special awards. We’ve done pre-release screenings of two of these films at the Burns over the past two months–Childhood of a Leader and Neon Bull. In June we’ll be screening the third—our grand-prize winner—an astonishingly moving and rich American film called Free in Deed, which is based on mind-boggling true events from recent history in Memphis, TN, and shot largely on location in the storefront evangelical church where real world spiritual events turned darkly challenging for the congregation—and law enforcement. A true “Black Lives Matter” masterpiece, the movie features extraordinary performances that feel so true that it’s kind of shocking to discover that no, those amazing performances were done by accomplished professional actors, not “real people” whose essences were somehow magically transferred by the cinema gods to this singularly rewarding picture. As of this writing, Free in Deed has yet to find an American distributor. Please come grab this opportunity to see it on the big JBFC screen, where motion pictures ought to be seen.” – Jonathan Demme, host of Rarely Seen Cinema
