“Exquisite and haunting…one of the talented director Francois Ozon’s very best films.” (Paper)
“A richly imagined and superbly assembled period piece.” (The Hollywood Reporter)
After WWI, a German woman named Anna (Paula Beer in her debut performance) is mourning the loss of her fiancé, Frantz (Anton von Lucke), who was killed in the trenches. When she notices a stranger placing flowers on his grave, he introduces himself as Adrien (Pierre Niney, Yves Saint Laurent), a French veteran of the war who claims a deep friendship with Frantz. Adrien’s presence is met with resistance by the small community still reeling from Germany’s defeat, yet Anna gradually becomes closer to the handsome and melancholy young man, hoping to learn more about his mysterious relationship with her fiancé. Filmmaker Francois Ozon (Young & Beautiful) returns with a sumptuous and lyrical period piece (shot beautifully in black and white) loosely inspired by the 1932 Ernst Lubitsch film, Broken Lullaby.
