Spike Lee’s semi-autobiographical period piece is a tender and heartfelt portrait of the Carmichaels, a Black middle class family living in Brooklyn in the 1970s. Academy Award nominee Alfre Woodard stars as Carolyn, a loving but fiercely independent mother who, along with her musician husband (Delroy Lindo), struggles to raise her five children in difficult but often wonderful circumstances. Featuring a captivating performance from Zelda Harris as the youngest of the Carmichael clan (and the only girl), Lee’s most personal work remains one of his best and most resonant.
