The setting is Brooklyn, five minutes from now. The technological advances and communication devices of the near future meant to increase connectivity and alleviate our boredom are only increasing the anxiety levels of the insecure New Yorkers who’ve inherited them. David (co-writer/director Benjamin Dickinson) is an overworked, prescription drug-dependent, advertising executive developing a high-profile marketing campaign for a new generation of Augmented Reality glasses—think an incredibly polished version of Google Glass. Feeling stuck in his relationship with an aimless yoga teacher, Juliette (Nora Zehetner, Brick), David throws himself into his work. As his home life crumbles, David finds himself attracted to his best friend’s captivating girlfriend, Sophie (Alexia Rasmussen, Proxy), and uses the glasses to develop a life-like avatar of her. Things escalate quickly as fantasy and reality begin to blur. Shot in sumptuous black and white, and featuring beautifully realized special effects, Creative Control is both a biting commentary on the direction of our technological reliance and a hilarious critique of naval-gazing hipster culture.
