Soldiers with a mysterious sleeping sickness are transferred to a temporary clinic set up in an abandoned school house. The memory-filled space becomes a revelatory world for housewife and volunteer Jenjira (Jenjira Pongpas, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives), as she watches over Itt (Banlop Lomnoi, Tropical Malady), a handsome soldier with no family visitors. While taking care of Itt, Jen befriends a young medium who uses her psychic powers to help loved ones communicate with the comatose men. At the same time, favoring science over psychic ability, the doctors at the clinic explore different healing methods, including colored light therapy, to ease the men’s troubled dreams. Magic, healing, romance, and dreams are all part of Jen’s tender path to a deeper awareness of herself and the world around her in Cemetery of Splendor, the masterful new work by award-winning filmmaker—and former JBFC International Filmmaker-in-Residence—Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
