When Todd Haynes has a new film out it is, without question, appointment viewing for the art house community. His latest triumph, Carol, is no exception. Adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt, the film tells the story of Therese (Rooney Mara), a department store clerk and aspiring photographer, who falls for older, married socialite, Carol (Cate Blanchett). Working again with Far from Heaven and Mildred Pierce cinematographer Edward Lachman, and shooting on Super 16mm film, Haynes has produced the most beautiful film of the year–one with production design so fantastic and authentic, it looks like it could have actually been shot in the 1950s. In addition to breakthrough performances from Blanchett and Mara, the film also sees excellent supporting performances from Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler, and Carrie Brownstein. Let the nominations pour in.
