A searing examination of an alienated young man, Burning tells the story of Jong-su (Ah-in Yoo), a frustrated introvert whose already difficult life is complicated by the arrival of two people into his orbit: Hae-mi (newcomer Jong-seo Jun), a spirited woman who offers romantic possibility and Ben (Steven Yeun, AMC’s The Walking Dead, Sorry to Bother You), a wealthy, sophisticated man Hae-mi meets while abroad. After learning of a mysterious hobby of Ben’s, and as Hae-mi’s affections waver, Jong-su’s confusion and obsessions begin to mount, culminating in a stunning finale. From legendary Korean auteur Lee Chang-dong, Burning is a meticulously crafted and wholly engrossing film. Chang-dong’s first feature in eight years offers “a portrait of youthful alienation, and what can happen when individuals are unable to ever connect” (Slate).
