The Relevance of Ragtime

PLEASE NOTE: Due to an unavoidable change in Brian Stokes Mitchell’s schedule, we’ve unfortunately had to cancel the Q&A portion of the event. We will still be screening the film at 5:30pm. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

We look forward to exploring the relevance of Ragtime, a quintessential American story about the struggle of immigrants seeking a better life in America, with a screening of the 1981 film adaptation directed by Milos Forman (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Amadeus), and starring James Cagney, Elizabeth McGovern, and Howard E. Rollins Jr. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Cinematography.

Although the story takes place a hundred years ago, the issues it presents are relevant in today’s society and the current civil discourse. The original production of Ragtime opened on January 18, 1998 and played for 834 performances. The show received 14 Tony Award nominations and won for Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and Best Orchestrations.

A one-night-only concert production of Ragtime, starring original Broadway cast members Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Peter Friedman, will take place on Monday, April 27 at the Minskoff Theatre in New York City.

Life on the Stage series is presented in partnership with the Actors Fund, a national human services organization that helps everyone – performers and those behind the scenes – who works in performing arts and entertainment.
