A Prairie Home Companion

Presented on 35mm

Robert Altman’s final film is a larger-than-life backstage fable about the cast and crew of a long running radio show whose idyllic showbiz family is suddenly interrupted when the radio station running the program is bought out by a media conglomerate. The show’s home venue, the historic Fitzgerald Theater, is set for demolition—and tonight’s show might be their last. Inspired by the variety show of the same name, which was created and hosted by the film’s screenwriter Garrison Keillor, A Prairie Home Companion features a colorful ensemble of actors including Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Lindsay Lohan, Kevin Kline, Woody Harrelson, John C. Reilly, Virginia Madsen, Tommy Lee Jones, Maya Rudolph, and more.

"Sometimes you forget how great an actor is, then he or she is reborn in an Altman movie."
David Edelstein, Vulture
"Both magical and consistently joyous. The director, Robert Altman, and the writer, Garrison Keillor, have, against all odds, transmuted the fatigued public radio institution into a lovely fable about mortality, fleeting fame, fondness for the past and the ineffable beauty of life in the present."
Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal

This film is part of the Altman at 100 series.
