A New Leaf

55th Anniversary Restoration

In Elaine May’s darkly comedic directorial debut, old money bachelor Henry Graham (Walter Mathau) learns that he has wasted away his inheritance. To return to his usual standard of living, he concocts a plan to marry—and murder—a wealthy heiress. His chosen target becomes Henrietta Lowell (played by May herself), an eccentric botany professor with no close family; but after the marriage, Henry is surprised to discover that disposing of Henrietta proves more challenging than he had imagined.

"A film of such wit and comic invention that it belongs among the great American comedies."
Calum Marsh, Village Voice
"[A New Leaf] is not short on laughs, and it defies any kind of trend, remaining wonderfully anachronistic, almost as if it was made decades earlier."
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
