“The Arab world faces dark challenges today. But people like Hind Bensari restore faith in the future. When I met her, I saw a bright light in a young woman who is not willing to accept injustice—not in the name of culture or for any other reason.” (Zainab Salbi, NY Times)
Following the death of Amina Filali, a 16-year-old girl who killed herself after she was allegedly forced to marry the man who raped her, Moroccan journalist and filmmaker Hind Bensari was moved to investigate the perception and misrepresentation of rape in her country. In Morocco, it is common that rapists are offered as husbands to their victims as a means to save the “honor” of the family. Liberating the voices of these victims has allowed Bensari to give audiences an unprecedented view of family, relationships, and arranged marriage in a country seeking to find its identity between modernity and tradition. This award-winning documentary led to the repeal of the Moroccan law that required rape victims to marry their attackers.
