3 Women

Initially inspired by a dream, Robert Altman’s 3 Women is a psychological drama centered on the relationship between Mildred “Pinky” Rose (Sissy Spacek), Mildred “Millie” Lammoreaux (Shelley Duvall), and Willie Hart (Janice Rule) set against the backdrop of a health spa for the elderly in rural California. The young and timid Pinky is an employee at the spa who becomes gradually interested in the older unapologetic Millie, whose first name they both share. As the two grow closer, their relationship begins to take over the lives and their identities: violating and transforming the boundaries of their own senses of self. The emotional maelstrom envelops the community around them, including local woman Willie: an unhappily married eccentric painter and expecting mother.

"3 Women is a daring piece of cinema that glides along the edge of weirdness and somehow manages not to fall off."
Eric Henderson, Slant Magazine
"I have seen it many times, been through it twice in shot-by-shot analysis, and yet it always seems to be happening as I watch it. Recurring dreams are like that."
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

This film is part of the Altman at 100 series.
