This riveting film from Ava DuVernay (Selma)— which is on almost every critic’s best documentary list for 2016 and a strong contender for an Oscar—was shown in theaters only in discrete special screenings, including the JBFC’s Remix series. We just had to bring it back to the big screen, where DuVernay’s powerful case, making the connection between the institution of slavery and the modern-day prison system, can be experienced with the greatest impact. – Kathy Bonomi, Programmer
