Artist Residency
The Artist Residency provides filmmakers with what is often hardest to find: time, space, and support to focus deeply on their work.
The focused time this residency has carved out for us has allowed us to see the project more clearly… The proximity to the Theater has been the most inspiring and invigorating experience of all.
Located just one hour north of New York City and steps from the train, the residency offers a rare combination of retreat and access. Artists can immerse themselves in their projects while engaging with a vibrant film community, world-class facilities, and an active cinema across the street.
Past residents have included internationally acclaimed filmmakers such as Bong Joon-ho (Parasite, Okja) and Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, Memoria).
A Connected Creative Environment
Residents are based in a private three-bedroom house and have full access to equipment and production spaces at the Media Arts Lab, and our robust film programming at the Theater. This proximity creates a dynamic environment where artists can develop work while staying connected to audiences, ideas, and collaborators.
What Artists Receive
Residencies typically span two to four weeks and support projects at a range of stages, from development through post-production.
Being in this edit bubble… you look at your project with new eyes. Here we can focus only on this while finding inspiration from a new place.
Breakthroughs happen when you have space and time together, not just a 60-minute Zoom where you’re racing through an agenda.
The Residency includes:
- Private housing in a three-bedroom home
- A dedicated editing suite with technical support
- A weekly stipend of $500 for up to two team members
- Access to Media Arts Lab facilities, including: 50-seat screening room, soundstage, recording studio, editing suites & stop-motion animation lab
- Travel support and logistical coordination
- Access to screenings and programs at the Theater
- Opportunities to present work-in-progress or completed films in collaboration with our programming team
- Travel support and logistical coordination
How Projects Are Selected
The residency supports six to 10 projects annually, selected through partnerships with leading international festivals and artist development programs, including Close Up Initiative, CPH:Forum, Points North, Docs Ireland, Ji.hlava, Dok Leipzig, FID Forum, and Millennium Docs Against Gravity.
The program also hosts artists through partnerships with leading artist support organizations such as the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program, giving us the privilege of welcoming projects each summer that are in the late stages of the editing process.
