Roy Whitman (John McIntire) hatches a plan to expand his town by bringing 100 marriageable women from Chicago to California. These women are accompanied by an experienced and hardened wagon master, Buck Wyatt (Robert Taylor), who struggles to safely lead them through the perilous desert.
