Even among cinema’s legends, Jean Vigo (1905–1934) stands apart. The son of a notorious anarchist, Vigo had a brief but brilliant career making poetic, influential films, always refusing to play by the rules.
After his untimely death from tuberculosis at age 29, Vigo left behind a large number of outtakes and rushes from Zero for Conduct and L’Atalante. Tournage d’Hiver is over an hour of this material restored and edited together with narration by French critic and historian Bernard Eisenschitz, who oversaw the restoration of L’Atalante. Released in 2017, it’s a fascinating peek behind the scenes. 4K restoration.
