An average family man who likes to read bedtime stories to his son seizes the opportunity to overcome his gray existence when his neighbor comes up with a surreal offer: There’s a treasure buried in his grandparents’ garden, and if he provides a metal detector, he’ll get half of whatever they find. Frank Capra meets the Romanian New Wave (as Indiewire’s Eric Kohn put it) in this highly stylized and uplifting fairy tale, complete with deadpan comedic moments, which goes slightly crazy as the quest progresses. You will be surprised by the emotional climax of this Cannes winner.Â
