The Northman

From visionary director Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse) comes The Northman, an action-filled epic that follows a young Viking prince in 10th century Iceland on his quest to avenge his father’s murder. Featuring an all-star cast that includes Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe.

With only three films to his credit, visionary writer/director Robert Eggers has quickly established himself as a searingly unique filmmaker. His blend of historical accuracy, arthouse aesthetics, and pulpy, genre thrills is unlike any other creative voice in modern cinema. Join us for a lively discussion of his latest film, The Northman, which follows a young Viking prince in 10th century Iceland on an epic, action-filled quest for revenge. We'll examine how the story is written and structured, along with all other aspects of the craft including cinematography, sound, music, and more.

About the Lecturer: Rob Morton has over a decade of experience as a screenwriting instructor at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. He attended NYU graduate film school in the mid-to-late '90s where he wrote and directed numerous award-winning short films. Prior to that, he earned a degree in film history and cinema studies at Hobart College. He joined the Jacob Burns Film Center as a screenwriting instructor in the fall of 2012.
