When struggling New York artist John Hollar (John Krasinski, NBC’s The Office) learns that his mother (Margo Martindale, FX’s The Americans, August: Osage County) has been diagnosed with a brain tumor, he’s forced to travel back to the small middle-American hometown he thought he left behind. Back in the house in which he grew up, John is immediately swept up in his family’s persistent dysfunction, not to mention old high school rivalries and the sexual advances of an over-eager ex-girlfriend. John’s attempts at peacekeeping are further complicated by his own impending parenthood with his girlfriend (Anna Kendrick, Pitch Perfect, The Last Five Years). From a script by James Strouse (People, Places, Things) that is at turns hilarious and heartbreaking, John Krasinski’s second directorial effort is a poignant look at the bonds of family and friendship.
