A bawdy, acerbic tale of royal intrigue, passion, envy, and betrayal, the latest from the great iconoclast Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth, The Lobster) is set in 18th-century England during the reign of the frail, mercurial Queen Anne (Olivia Colman, The Crown). When the charming young Abigail (Emma Stone, La La Land) arrives in court, she and the queen’s confidante and advisor (Rachel Weisz, Disobedience) embark on a battle royale for the monarch’s affections. No woman, man, politics, or rabbit will emerge unscathed. It’s a costume drama like no other. The Favourite was selected as the opening-night film of the New York Film Festival.
