After one of their shoplifting sessions, Osamu (Lily Franky, Like Father, Like Son) and his son Shota come across a little girl in the freezing cold. At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu’s wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces. Although the family is poor—barely making enough money to survive through petty crime—they seem to live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that unite them. From master filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, Shoplifters is “delicately observed and perfectly played, […] consummate, flawless film-making” (Times). Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

“Kore-eda has the sensitive, calibrated touch of a master safecracker, and he's a virtuoso of emotional and narrative buildup.”
“A compact masterpiece about a scruffy family that isn't what it seems, and love that's the real thing.”
