Brie Larson, Golden Globe winner for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama
Adapted from Emma Donoghue’s New York Times bestseller, Room tells the extraordinary story of Jack (played here by magnificent newcomer Jacob Tremblay), a spirited 5 year-old who is looked after by his loving and devoted Ma (Brie Larson, Short Term 12, The Spectacular Now). Like any good mother, Ma dedicates herself to keeping Jack happy and safe, nurturing him with warmth and love and doing typical things like playing games and telling stories. The difference between their life together and other families however, is they are trapped in a windowless, 10-by-10-foot space, which Ma has euphemistically named “Room.” As Jack’s curiosity about their situation grows, and Ma’s resilience reaches its breaking point, they enact a risky plan to escape, ultimately bringing them face-to-face with what may turn out to be the scariest thing yet: the real world. What starts as a harrowing story of loss and anger beautifully transitions to one of love and possibility. Through the direction of Lenny Abrahamson (the director of Frank, another film that finds the beauty of humanity in the strangest of places), Room is a transformative experience, one that not only celebrates life, but gives us a newfound appreciation for all that we have in this world.
