Rainbow Time

Q&A filmmaker/actor Linas Phillips with Jonathan Demme

Yeah, here is a great new movie talent, on both sides of the camera, and his name is Linas Phillips. A big, big fan of Phillips since seeing him in an earlier film—Manson Family Vacation—last year. I recently had the chance to get a peek at Linas’ new feature director/actor outing, Rainbow Time, and this is one bold, funny and moving picture, premiering next month in Manhattan.  But as is often the case, we are scooping again at the JBFC with a special preview screening of this perfectly low-budget indie wonder-fest. As in Manson Family Vacation, Linas Phillips is an astonishing actor to watch, especially perhaps when he is the writer-creator of the kind of outré but humanist world he lures us into here. Dazzled—but made somewhat uncomfortable by the fact that Phillip’s character in Rainbow is a young man whose “head was run over ” at an early age by his slightly older brother Todd, played by Timm Sharp (who I worked with a few years ago on Enlightened), a second viewing left me simply dazzled. Not sure what the PC-police will make of this one, but I hope that we can fill the theater with intrepid Burnsians who will let Mr. Phillips (and me) know how they feel about this decidedly original take on brotherhood, family, love, regret, courage, voyeurism, masturbation, gonzo filmmaking and many other Rainbow-like subjects. The object of both brother’s love is played by the fantastic Melanie Lynskey, from Togetherness and more recently The Intervention, the supporting cast is great, highlighted by cameos by Jay Duplass (who also produced the film) and Tobin Bell (who many may know from the Saw movies, although he has been a steady character actor in movies for a long time now).  As always, if you need a higher recommendation, this is another film in the seemingly endless stream of great indie film and TV featuring one or more of the amazing Duplass brothers on various sides of the camera. Linas previously directed Walking to Werner and Bass Akwards. This is a scoop, y’all—come on over!
