Port of Shadows

Presented in a new DCP restoration courtesy of Rialto Pictures

Simone de Beauvoir reported that this was the only French film of the 1930s that she and Jean-Paul Sartre both admired. Directed by Marcel Carné and written by Jacques Prévert, who went on to create Children of Paradise in 1945, Port of Shadows is the visually stunning story of Jean Gabin as an army deserter looking for refuge in the fog-enshrouded streets of nighttime Le Havre. Gabin is mesmerizing in a role that, along with Pépé le Moko and Grand Illusion, made him the quintessential French actor of his time.

Restoration supervised by Studiocanal and La Cinémathèque Francaise with the support of the Franco-American Cultural Fund

This film is part of the Classic French Cinema: Breakout Roles series.
