Selected for the New York, Telluride, and Chicago film festivals, Ramona (Andrei Cretulescu, 21 m.) won in Cannes and is the leader of the pack – a perfectly crafted act of poetic justice at its darkest. Also dark are Start Anew World (Luiza Parvu, 23 m.), a quiet story of sacrifice from a forgotten generation of Romanian immigrants in the US; Black Friday (Roxana Stroe, 21 m.), the deadpan tale of an occasional sniper in communist Romania; and The Messenger (Radu Potcoava, 13 m.), an absurd face-off between a gangster and a teen. On the light side, there’s the hilarious Balkan music-infused There’s Nothing in this World (Andreea Valean, 10 m.). And last but not least, Das Spektrum Europas (Cristi Puiu, 13 m.), a subversive history lesson taught by an old couple in bed.
