“A remarkable achievement. This is art as cultural inspiration and economic development.” (Austin Chronicle)
In 2017 MASS MoCA became the largest museum for contemporary art in the world when, just three decades earlier, its 16 acres of sprawling brick buildings were relics of the shuttered Sprague Electric factory, the onetime biggest employer in a Berkshires town near economic collapse. Museum Town traces the story of the industrial site’s rise, decline, and spectacular rebirth as an art mecca, focusing on artist Nick Cave as he assembles his installation UNTIL in 2016. Weaving together commentary by former factory workers, shopkeepers, and other residents, as well as interviews with artists from James Turrell to David Byrne, the film captures the intersection of small-town USA and the global art world in a testament to the power of tenacity and imagination.
