Q&A filmmaker Ahmad Abdallah

Moe, an aspiring director, is in the midst of an existential crisis. His film is underfinanced, his friends are being arrested, and his dream projects are proving to be impossible to pull off. A wild overnight taxi ride through Cairo (reminiscent of Martin Scorsese’s After Hours) with the plainspoken prostitute Toutou and driver Mostafa, opens his eyes to a different side of the city and gives him a new perspective. This atmospheric, wry comedy with terrific performances packs a punch.

Ahmed started out as a music student in Cairo in the 1990s. In 1999, he shifted gears and began taking jobs on films, first as an editor, eventually doubling as both a visual effects supervisor and credits designer. His premiere feature, Heliopolis was one of the first independent Egyptian films to be released theatrically in Egypt. He followed it by Microphone which was selected among the best 100 Arabic films in history by the Dubai International Film Festival. He wrote and directed Rags & Tatters in 2013 and Decor in 2014.
