A United Kingdom

Based on extraordinary true events, A United Kingdom stars David Oyelowo (Selma, Queen of Katwe) as Seretse Khama, the King of Botswana. While studying in London in 1947, Seretse meets office worker Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike, Gone Girl), and the two fall in love. However, they find their proposed union challenged at every turn, first by their families, then by the British and South African governments. As the policy of apartheid begins to take shape, South African leaders find the notion of an interracial couple ruling a neighboring country intolerable, and threaten Britain’s access to uraniam and gold if they refuse to intervene. With the odds stacked against them, Rose and Seretse choose to defy family and country in pursuit of a life together. Filmmaker Amma Asante (Belle) brings skill and grace to her depiction of an extraordinarily complex and important historical moment.
