Elle Fanning (20th Century Women, Neon Demon) is Ray, a teenager who has decided to transition from female to male and is hoping to begin hormone treatments. Ray’s decision is met with a mix of support from his single mother, Maggie (Naomi Watts, Demolition, Birdman), and uncertainty from his lesbian grandmother, Dolly (Susan Sarandon, FX’s Feud, Mothers and Daughters), who is having a hard time accepting that she now has a grandson. Tension within the family is complicated by the fact that Maggie must track down Ray’s biological father for his legal consent to allow Ray’s transition.
