Raw

Everyone in Justine’s (Garance Marillier) family is a vet. And a vegetarian. At 16, she’s a brilliant and promising student. When she starts at veterinary school, she enters a decadent, merciless, and dangerously seductive world. During the first week of hazing rituals, desperate to fit in at any cost, she strays from her family principles when she eats raw meat for the first time. Justine will soon face the terrible and unexpected consequences of her actions as her true self begins to emerge. The first feature from writer/director Julia Ducournau, Raw is a one-of-a-kind coming-of-age film that shocked the Toronto Film Festival in 2016, only to become one of the best reviewed films of the year so far. While not for the faint of heart, Raw is a “lurid, vivid film…visually striking, full of images that will shock you while others will lull you with a hypnotic beauty” (RogerEbert.com) and a “cleverly written, impressively made and incredibly gory tale of one young woman’s awakening to the pleasures of the flesh—in all senses of the term” (The Hollywood Reporter).
