TRIMPIN: The Sound of Invention

Q&A renowned composer/sound artist Trimpin with moderator Stephan Moore, Sonic Innovations Curator at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts

With brilliant sound artist Trimpin in attendance, we’ll be celebrating Caramoor’s upcoming unveiling of In”C”, his first large-scale permanent piece on the East Coast. We’re thrilled to be screening the fascinating documentary TRIMPIN: The Sound of Invention, which premiered at SXSW in 2009, and explores his large-scale sound sculptures, including a 60-foot tower of automated electric guitars, an experimental design of a “perpetual motion” machine, and a look at his eccentric, awe-inspiring studio. Afterwards, the wildly creative sound artist/composer/inventor/engineer Trimpin will be joined in conversation with Stephan Moore, the Sonic Innovations Curator at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts.

All proceeds from this event will benefit the JBFC’s Creative Culture Fellowship Program, courtesy of filmmaker Peter Esmonde.

Trimpin is a German-born composer and sound artist who has lived and worked in Seattle since 1979. His sound sculptures, installations and set designs have been developed in collaboration with artists such as Merce Cunningham, Samuel Beckett, Conlon Nancarrow and the Kronos Quartet. His work has appeared at museums, galleries and festivals across the Pacific Northwest. Combining digital technology with everyday salvaged materials, Trimpin has invented ways of playing interactive instruments made from saw blades, toy monkeys, beer bottles, slide projectors, turkey basters, and more! He is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and the MacArthur “Genius” grant.

Chicago-based sound artist Stephan Moore is currently the curator of sound art at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts. As a sound installation artist, composer, and theatrical sound designer, he has been working at the forefront of the experimental audio world for the past 20 years, and has been recognized with numerous awards, grants, and artist residencies. He has designed over 20 dance and theater productions in New York City, was previously the touring sound engineer and music supervisor for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and formed Isobel Audio LLC in 2012 to promote and distribute Hemisphere Speakers.

This film is part of the Caramoor at the Burns: Movies Musicians Love series.
