Southside With You is the story of President Barack Obama (Parker Sawyer, Zero Dark Thirty) and First Lady Michelle Obama’s, (Tika Sumpter, Get on Up) first date in her hometown of Chicago. The film traces their daylong adventure, from the Art Institute of Chicago to a screening of Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing all the while establishing a vibrant, thoughtful portrait of a world-famous romance’s first steps. Due to Sawyer and Sumpter’s uncanny resemblance to the President and First Lady, as well as their charming performances, Southside With You avoids gimmick. Instead director Richard Tanne’s first feature presents, “a fully realized, intricately imagined, warmhearted, sharp-witted, and perceptive drama, one that sticks close to its protagonists while resonating quietly but grandly with the sweep of a historical epic.” (The New Yorker)
